Why are my custom events not being forwarded to GA4?
When Google Tag Manager does not forward custom events to GA4, important conversion data is missing from your reports. Every custom event must be configured as a GA4 event tag and linked to the correct Measurement ID. Additionally, missing parameters or incorrect event names can cause the problem. Learn why custom events are not reaching GA4.
Google Tag Manager does not forward custom events to GA4 when the GA4 event tag is missing or misconfigured. The event name in the tag must exactly match the desired GA4 event. However, reserved event names like page_view or session_start are captured automatically by GA4 and should not be sent again. Therefore, first check the GA4 DebugView. Additionally, the Debugger view in GTM helps with diagnosis.
Create a separate GA4 event tag in GTM for each custom event. The tag must reference the correct Measurement ID from the GA4 configuration tag. Moreover, you can pass event parameters such as value, currency, or items as key-value pairs. The GA4 event reference defines the recommended parameter names.
Use GA4 DebugView to check events in real time before publishing the container. This shows immediately whether events arrive with all parameters. Furthermore, we recommend using a GA4 configuration tag as a reference and pointing event tags to it. Additionally, register custom dimensions in GA4 so event parameters become available in reports.
Custom events do not reach GA4 when tag configuration or Measurement ID are incorrect. Therefore, systematic verification with DebugView is essential. Our Google Ads agency configures your GA4 tracking professionally.
