Why can’t I see my keywords in the search terms report anymore?
When you can no longer see your keywords in the search terms report, it is due to a change Google introduced in September 2020. Since then, Google only displays search terms that reach a minimum search volume. This means: you lose transparency over a significant portion of your paid clicks.
Since the 2020 change, industry analyses estimate up to 30-40% of search terms are missing from the report. Google justifies this with individual user privacy. In practice this means: you pay for clicks without knowing which search terms triggered them. Long-tail keywords with low individual volume are especially affected – precisely the terms where negative keywords matter most. Additionally, the share of visible search terms has continued to decrease in recent years.
Although Google restricts data, there are alternative methods for analysis. Connect Google Ads with GA4 – there you can see additional landing page data that allows conclusions about search terms. Use Google Search Console for organic keyword data and compare with your Ads keywords. Use UTM parameters to analyze traffic more granularly in your analytics tool.
Switch from Broad Match to Phrase Match or Exact Match to maintain control over search terms. Proactively build negative keyword lists based on industry knowledge rather than just the search terms report. Use GA4 and Search Console as supplementary data sources. Review the search terms report at least weekly and export data regularly.
Limited transparency in the search terms report complicates campaign optimization but is not an unsolvable problem. As a Google Ads agency, we use multiple data sources and proactive keyword management. Additionally, SEO provides full transparency over organic search terms via Google Search Console.
