Why isn’t my Conversion Tracking working?
When your Google Ads Conversion Tracking is not working, you lose the most important foundation for data-driven optimization. Without correct conversion data, neither you nor the Google algorithm can identify which keywords and ads actually generate inquiries. The most common cause is a misconfigured Google Tag Manager. The conversion tag either does not fire at all, fires on every page instead of just the thank-you page, or fires twice. Another common error: conversion tracking was set up, but the conversion action in Google Ads is set to “Secondary” instead of “Primary.” Additionally, an incorrectly implemented Consent Mode can completely block tracking for EU visitors.
According to Google Support, the top 3 errors are: (1) Conversion Linker tag missing in GTM – without this tag, Google cannot attribute cross-domain conversions. (2) The trigger is configured for “All Pages” instead of the specific thank-you page URL. (3) The conversion ID or conversion label in the tag does not match the values in Google Ads. Additionally, some cookie banners completely block conversion tracking when Consent Mode is not correctly implemented.
Implement conversion tracking exclusively through Google Tag Manager – not directly in source code. Use GTM Preview Mode and Google Tag Assistant to test every tag before going live. Ensure the Conversion Linker tag fires on all pages. Check in Google Ads under Tools > Conversions whether the conversion action has status “Recording.”
