Why doesn’t Google Consent Mode v2 work with my cookie plugin?
If doesn’t Google Consent Mode work properly with your cookie plugin, you are not alone. Many content management systems use cookie plugins that do not yet fully support Consent Mode v2. As a result, consent signals are not correctly transmitted to Google Tag Manager. Furthermore, the necessary integration between CMP and GTM is often missing.
The most common reason is that the cookie plugin does not support the new Consent Mode v2 parameters. Since March 2024, Google additionally requires the parameters ad_user_data and ad_personalization. Consequently, Google Consent Mode doesn’t work correctly with older plugin versions. Moreover, some plugins set the consent status only after the page loads, which is too late. More details in our FAQ on banner blocking GTM.
Google maintains an official list of certified Consent Management Platforms. These include Cookiebot, Usercentrics, and OneTrust, for example. These platforms support all Consent Mode v2 parameters and offer seamless GTM integration. As a result, Google Consent Mode works reliably with these solutions. The complete list is available on the Google CMP partner page.
We recommend switching to a Google-certified CMP if your current cookie plugin does not fully support Consent Mode v2. Furthermore, after the migration you should conduct a comprehensive test to ensure all consent signals are transmitted correctly. This way, you avoid data losses and ensure your website’s GDPR compliance.
